I am very thankful to the American Bar Association House of Delegates for approving today a resolution I had the privilege of drafting that opposes arming teachers.  Public policy decisions by our elected officials should be based upon data and not political calculus.  Contrary to what many politicians and many in the public assume, studies indicate that arming teachers would increase the risk of students being shot, not reduce it.  Studies of police firearm discharge data show that in a gunfight, even highly trained police officers miss the intended target the vast majority of the time creating significant risk of bystander injury.
